Creator

Darryl Tom first started Shibui Style in 2015 and rebranded to Shibui Wood and Designs in 2018. He describes his style and inspiration being rooted in both Japanese aesthetics and the great furniture maker George Nakashima. Being fortunate enough to visit Japan on many occasions, he was drawn to the beauty of Japanese designs that were simple yet served an everyday purpose. Shibui Wood and Designs is a home décor studio focusing on custom built furniture where everything is handmade in California.

Here at Shibui Wood & Designs, we are a family owned shop that takes the time and care to create each item by hand. All our creations are inspired by the beauty and simplicity that is found every day in nature. This is evident from the rich natural colors found in each hand-picked piece of wood. We strive to design and build attractive items that are visually appealing and also have an everyday use.

What is Shibui?

Shibui is a Japanese term that is strongly associated with aesthetics. Although it has no direct translation to English, Shibui describes a certain beauty that extends beyond what one sees on the surface. Objects with a Shibui design appear to be simple yet when examined closer offer ever changing complexities that can produce different emotions. These changing complexities also make the piece seem alive and always evolving. Natural imperfections however are not covered up but instead are enhanced in order to showcase its unique character.
